Amanda is a 27 year old female who was diagnosed with Stargardts in 2000. She is district sales manager for a clothing store. Although Amanda was referred by Rehab Services Commission (BSVI), the original connection to Clovernook came from a participant in one of our support groups who suggested she ask us for help. This support group participant brought Amanda to Clovernook during our Universal Low Vision Aids open house where she was introduced to portable video magnifiers.
Amanda reported having difficulty reading email, doing detailed work such as paperwork, threading needles and reading credit card numbers. Amanda participated in low vision and computer assessments and a CCTV evaluation.
Low vision – Although several handheld magnifiers were recommended and loaned, Amanda felt that they tended to add to bulk and were difficult to use sometimes. Amanda did like the typoscope and reported it keeps her place while reading. Amanda was also introduced to a self threading needle and a Witch needle threader.
Computers/CCTV – Amanda’s assessment resulted in various recommendations from larger flat panel color monitor at work, installing Zoomtext, use of task lighting and use of a portable CCTV unit, the Amigo. Amanda liked the task lighting added to her workstation and stated that the portable CCTV would help in threading needles, reading paperwork and conducting business at other store locations or during travel. Clovernook has been assisting Amanda with setting up her workstation at work which she has been quite impressed with the quick, easy, and more importantly, subtle changes to her work station.
