Helpful Tips For Living With Low Vision

Use a pillbox, label with different colored tape or different sized rubber bands, or write a large letter on the prescription bottle to help identify medications.

Place toothpaste on your finger then put it on your toothbrush or place your finger and thumb along both side of toothbrush head to create a barrier.

Put bright and/or glow in the dark tape around light switches to make them easier to find.

Pour liquids into contrasting colored containers like coffee into a white mug or milk into a dark mug.

Put salt and pepper in clear dispensers so you can see the color difference.

Avoid busy patterns in tablecloths. Use contrasting tablecloth and dishes- ex.-white dishes on a dark green tablecloth.

Apply tactile markings at different settings on appliance dials.

Keep a flashlight handy to help illuminate a dark appliance dial.

When preparing food work on a tray to help contain the mess and to avoid having to search for ingredients or utensils.

Wear an apron with many pockets when cleaning and keep cleaning supplies in the pockets.

When sewing use a magnet to pick up dropped needles and pins.

When sewing on a button that is the same color as the garment, put tissue paper between the fabric to show contrast.

In the bathtub float a brightly colored toy or sponge in the water to help you see the water level.

Use brightly colored soap and towels for easier location.

Cover areas that create glare with scatter rugs.

Common household items can be used for labeling such as rubber bands, pipe cleaners, toothpicks, cork/felt dots, nail polish, glue, electrical tape, safety pins, beads, sandpaper, Velcro, fabric/puffy paints and craft supplies.

Need an eye report, no less than a year old, to see the patient. Simple to send in request for a low vision evaluation or to call and we set up the rest.

Tuesday of every week/every month (excluding holidays i.e. 4th of July sometimes) - we see patients at our Hamilton Avenue clinic 8:30am is our first appointment up to 3:30pm is our last one. Appointments run typically one and a half hours.
